5 Common StarRupture Factory Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

StarRupture's factory system is more complex than it first appears. This article is written against the current live planner baseline, not PTB research, and the fixes below are designed to send you back to a calculator or machine database check before you commit to a rebuild. These 5 mistakes account for a huge share of the "why isn't my factory working?" posts you see in the community.
Building Before Calculating Machine Counts
StarRupture machines have fixed production rates. If you don't match excavator output to smelter input, some machines always idle. The rule: 1 Ore Excavator outputs 60 IPM → feeds exactly 1 Smelter (which also processes 60 IPM). Add a second excavator before adding a second smelter.
Underestimating Power Requirements
Power ramps faster than it looks, and old forum numbers are one of the easiest ways to misread a save. The useful lesson is not memorizing stale wattage values. It is recognizing that one more production machine can erase your margin if the grid is already close to full.
Skipping Rail Lines and Hand-Carrying Items
Rail lines feel optional early game — you can jog ore over yourself. But this approach collapses immediately when you add a second machine. Rails are the circulatory system of your factory. Without them, every machine is an island.
Ignoring the Wolfram Bottleneck
Powder and chemistry lines usually fail at the intermediate step, not the final recipe. In the current community baseline, Crusher throughput is a common bottleneck for Wolfram-heavy lines, so a factory can look ore-rich while still starving the machines that actually need powder.
Leveling the Wrong Corporation First
The Fabricator machine — required for Electronics, Rotors, Stabilizers, and nearly every mid-game recipe — is locked behind Selenian Corporation Level 2. Players who skip Selenian early find themselves unable to fulfill most corporation delivery bundles because the required items literally cannot be crafted yet.
The One Rule That Prevents All 5 Mistakes
Calculate and cross-check before you build. Every mistake above stems from building intuitively instead of checking machine counts, power needs, and unlock dependencies in advance. The Production Calculator and Machine Database were built to give you those live checks before you place a single machine in-game.
