Ignitium is one of StarRupture's most misunderstood resources. Players often discover it by accident, aren't sure what it does, and then waste it on low-value crafting. This guide explains exactly what Ignitium is, where to find every node, and how to use it efficiently.
What Is Ignitium?
Ignitium is a rare mineral resource that appears as glowing orange-red crystal formations in StarRupture's cave systems and volcanic surface areas. It is distinct from normal ores in two critical ways:
- Cannot be excavated — Ore Excavators do not detect or mine Ignitium. It must be collected manually by walking up to the formation and interacting with it
- Does not respawn — each Ignitium node is a one-time collection. Once mined, it is gone from that world permanently
This makes Ignitium a finite strategic resource. Treat your supply like ammunition rather than a bulk material.
Where to Find Ignitium
Cave Systems (Primary Source)
The majority of Ignitium in any world is found in underground cave systems. Cave entrances appear on your map after unlocking Moon Energy Level 3. Inside caves:
- Ignitium crystals glow orange-red and are visible at medium range in the dark
- They typically spawn on cave walls and ceiling ledges, not on the floor
- Each cave system contains 3–8 Ignitium nodes
- Bring a weapon — caves contain alien enemies including armored variants
Volcanic Surface Zones (Secondary Source)
Volcanic regions in the eastern and southeastern map zones have surface Ignitium deposits. These are easier to reach than caves but have fewer nodes per area. Look for terrain with dark rock formations and occasional heat shimmer effects.
What to Craft With Ignitium
Grenades (Highest Priority)
Grenades are the single best use of Ignitium. They deal high area-of-effect damage and are especially effective against:
- The Goliath boss (most efficient damage-per-Ignitium use)
- Armored enemy groups during Rupture events
- Infection Carrier clusters before they spread clouds
Requires the Armory to be built (Griffith Blue Corporation unlock).
Advanced Components
Ignitium also appears in a small number of late-game component routes, but the database currently focuses factory-chain items rather than every exploration-only pickup. Use the Item Database for downstream factory dependencies, then cross-check your live craft prompts before spending a rare Ignitium stockpile on anything other than grenades.
Ignitium Resource Management
Because Ignitium doesn't respawn, rationing matters:
- Do not use grenades on basic aliens — Standard Ammo handles them fine. Reserve grenades for armored enemies and boss encounters
- Explore all caves before mid-game — unlock Moon Energy Level 3, get the map, then systematically clear cave systems while you're still building your factory
- Store in a dedicated container — keep Ignitium in a separate storage chest labeled clearly so you don't accidentally use it in bulk production
- Track your total — a typical world has 30–60 total Ignitium. Each grenade costs 2, so you have roughly 15–30 grenades per world
